morphine drip
Question from John S on 5/2/2019:

Someone I know passed away from cancer. He was dying and in a lot of pain so he was put on a morphine drip. Once he started the morphine drip he died about a week later. I know you can't tell me if his body could have tolerated an IV. Neither do I know if an IV was tried. I am just wondering if, in cases like this, an IV should be tried. Is it moral to put someone on a morphine drip toward the end for pain and nothing else?

Answer by Judie Brown on 5/6/2019:

John

There is nothing immoral about the use of a morphine drip unless the intention of the person administering the drip is to cause the death of the patient.
