Writings of the early church fathers
Question from Zoe on 4/16/2019:

Greetings: I have been searching for a series of books written by the early church fathers. Recently, I have found a series titled, 'Ancient Christian Writers Series', which consists of 61 volumes. My question is, would this be a good resource for me, as a Catholic? If not, is there a series you would recommend?

Thank you, Zoe from Texas

Answer by Robert Klesko on 4/30/2019:

Thank you for the question. The "Ancient Christian Writers Series" is exhaustive and would get you right into reading the Fathers in their own words. That being said, 61 volumes is quite a lot.

There are other anthologies of the Church Fathers that are worth considering. "Early Christian Fathers", edited by Cyril Richardson is quite good. "The Christian Faith", edited by Neuner and Dupuis is a compendium of documents from the apostolic age through Vatican II arranged thematically which is helpful.

If you'd prefer an introduction to the Fathers, two titles come to mind - "The Fathers Know Best" by Jimmy Akin and "When the Church Was Young" by Marcellino D'Ambrosio. Of course, there are many books that are introductions to the Church Fathers. Benedict XVI's book called "Church Fathers" is also a good little introduction as well!

Finally, do seek out the writings of the Fathers that are available online for free. A basic internet search would show you what is out there.

I hope this is helpful! God bless!
