Dicastery for Bishops

The Dicastery for Bishops, formerly the Congregation for Bishops, examines what pertains to the constitution and provision of particular churches (dioceses). It proposes to the Roman Pontiff candidates for the office of bishop in dioceses, as well as apostolic administrators, coadjutors and auxiliaries of bishops, military and other vicars and prelates enjoying personal jurisdiction. Similarly, it proposes the constitution of new dioceses, provinces and regions, as well as their division, union and realignment, and all matters having to do with bishops generally. The Prefect is also the President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
