CHAPTER 15 — NEWSPEAK: LANGUAGE OF DELUSION

American Life League

Woe to them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.

                                                                                                            Isaiah 5:20.

Anti-Life Philosophy.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean neither more nor less."

Through the Looking Glass.

Progressives do not use confusing language because we represent truth and justice, unlike our backward, intolerant, Neanderthal opponents. Our movements originated in love and frankness, and so we always "tell it like it is."

What Is Newspeak?

One of the most ominous features of the present epoch is undoubtedly the dethronement of truth.

                                                                                            Dietrich von Hildebrand.

Introduction.

The most devastating and effective weapon in the anti-life arsenal is the cascade of meaningless, 'feel-good' words that lull the reader or listener into inaction. After all, what can an average person do when he or she is faced with a "word salad" of vague generalities, biased terms, polished slogans, and half-baked half-truths?

He or she just nods, smiles blandly, and wonders what it is all about, fearful of appearing untrendy, "reactionary," "politically incorrect," or just plain ignorant.

Orwell's View.

The deceptive use of language in conjunction with social incrementalism (as described in Chapter 7) constitutes the mechanism that creates the proper atmosphere for a Holocaust to evolve. This principle has been recognized throughout the ages; thousands of years ago, Plato remarked that "confusion is a tool of oppression."

George Orwell, author of the famous novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, also recognized this principle. He described the use of Newspeak by tomorrow's totalitarian regimes. Orwell stated that "The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink."[1]

The Appendix to Orwell's famous book accurately outlines the ultimate aim of Newspeak: "The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the worldview ... but to make all other modes of thought impossible."

According to Orwell, some language is "... designed to make lies sound truthful and murder acceptable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind." He warned against "... the invasion of one's mind by ready-made phrases." Orwell said that every such "... ready-made phrase [slogan] anesthetizes a portion of one's brain. Representatives of oppressive governments from Hermann Goebbels of Nazi Germany to Chairman Mao of Communist China have recognized and exploited the manipulative power of the written and spoken word."[1]

Newspeak — Doublethink.

Orwell understood the deeper psychological ramifications of Newspeak. He warned us that the use of Newspeak inevitably dulls our thinking processes and leads to a kind of permanent split-personality called "Doublethink," which is "... the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them."[1]

National public opinion polls on the subject of abortion have vividly demonstrated the pervasiveness of Doublethink in this country. These surveys show that a majority of Americans think that abortion is murder and that it is immoral. However, a majority also believes that abortion should remain legal, at least for rape, incest, and for fetal deformity!

This is tantamount to a person mounting two bumperstickers next to each other on his car: "ABORTION IS MURDER" and "KEEP ABORTION SAFE AND LEGAL."

Doublethink also allowed Washington State lawmakers to debate a bill that would allow the licensing of prostitutes "only upon satisfactory proof that the applicant is of good character."[2]

Members of the American public are woefully ignorant about the life issues. Most people do not even know what abortion is, or how far into pregnancy it is allowed in our country. They have no idea what homosexuals do to each other and to innocent persons. And they do not realize what the ultimate objectives of the euthanasiasts are. Perhaps this is the reason that the majority of Americans believe that immoral murder should be allowable in the United States in the form of abortion; that homosexuals should have a 'right to privacy' so they can commit acts that the ordinary person finds hideous; and that 'death with dignity' is A Good Thing For Everyone. Although willful ignorance may contribute to these strange attitudes, they are also due in large part to the insulating effects of Doublethink.

Institutional Newspeak.

If names are not correct, language will not be in accordance with the truth of things.

                                                                                                          Confucius.[3]

Overview.

There are basically two types of Newspeak;

• institutional Newspeak ('overspeak,' which attaches flowery or
   incomprehensible labels to everyday objects and actions); and
• genocidal Newspeak ('underspeak,' which describes atrocities with
   soothing and deceptive terms).

These two types of Newspeak are entirely different in their origins and objectives, as described in the following paragraphs.

The Bureaucrats Speak (Sort Of).

Institutional Newspeak is academic or bureaucratic gibberish that has become a habit or is deliberately employed to impress or confuse people. It is irritating and it impedes efficiency because it is confusing, but it is generally harmless.

Desk-bound bureaucrats in the United States military and in large corporations seem particularly susceptible to this type of 'semanticide.' For example, every GI in the United States Army whether he knows it or not carries a "combat emplacement evacuator" into the field.

We common folks refer to such an instrument as a "shovel."

Other examples of military and corporate 'verbicide' are shown below.

EXAMPLES OF MILITARY AND CORPORATE 'OVERSPEAK'

[A medium text size on your computer's 'view' setting is recommended, otherwise, the tables may be discombobulated.]

to be ambushed . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."engage the enemy on all sides"
bomb civilians . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. "erode the population's will"
to bribe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  "to exchange amenities"
bullets . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."kinetic energy penetrators"
life preserver . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. "personal flotation device"
to kill . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."terminate with prejudice"

Those persons who lose their jobs because of a recession will probably not be comforted very much by the knowledge that "redundancies in the human resources area have been involuntarily leisured" and that they have been "decruited."

Double Insulation.

Newspeak is often committed in two layers. In such word surgery, the patient usually goes into a coma, along with those who read it. An incomprehensible babble is shortened to a cutesy acronym that is used as a kind of 'shortspeak' which is doubly difficult for the uninitiated to penetrate.

Actual systems planned or employed by the United States government in the 1960s included BAMBI ("Ballistic Missile Bombardment Interceptor"); IDIOT ("Instrumentation Digital On-Line Transfer"); and MANIAC ("Mathematical Analyzer, Numerical Integrator and Computer").

As another example, the current Army Joint Operations Handbook is replete with phrases such as "By JCS charter, the Army representative is the DCSOPS. However, the ADCSOPS(JA), who is the DEPOPSDEP, may act for the OPSDEP on all joint matters. The use of the term OPSDEP also includes DEPOPSDEP. OPSDEPs or DEPOPSDEPs can approve papers for JCs."[2]

Is that perfectly clear?

Grunts in the United States Army have always used acronyms that somehow seem to be clearer than the concepts they represent. Among these are SNAFU (Situation Normal, All Fouled Up); TARFU (Things Are Really Fouled Up); FUBB (Fouled Up Beyond Belief); and FUBAR (Fouled Up Beyond Recognition).

The acknowledged Armed Forces acronym champ has to be the United States Navy, whose high-ranking officers invariably have incomprehensible strings of initials following their names. The longest of these is "COMSUBCOM-NELMCOMHEDSUPPACT," which stands for Commander, Subordinate Command, United States Naval Forces, Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, Commander Headquarters Support Activities.[4]

Muddying the Waters.

Orwell's work Politics and the English Language illustrates the type of linguistic corruption that happens when institutional Newspeak flowers.

A passage in Ecclesiastes states; "I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill, but time and chance happeneth to them all."

Orwell transformed this into the imprecise and confusing language of bureaucratic Newspeak; "Objective consideration of contemporary phenomena compels the conclusion that success or failure in competitive activities exhibits no tendency to be commensurate with innate capacity, but that a considerable element of the unpredictable must invariably be taken into account."

Another favorite of wordsmiths is the admonishment to be thrifty: "He who is sedulous in avoiding the irresponsibility of the financially insolvent will be spared the inconvenience of that economic deprivation customarily found in the lower socio-economic environment."

In other (and shorter) words, "Waste not, want not."

Gibberish By Social Engineers.

The United States military and large corporations have lately yielded their Newspeak crown to bureaucrats in various social services agencies (although it must be said that the former fought long and gallantly to retain their ascendancy in this strange competition).

Make no mistake regardless of its mission, the prime objective of any government agency at any level is self-preservation. To assist survival in the semantic jungle, functionaries duel constantly with each other and with the world by throwing up an impenetrable barrier of doggerel that repels all but the most determined and curious inquirer.

Instructors do not teach a kid to swim; they "transfer skills in a program designed to meet performance objectives of increased mobility in aquatic elements."[2] Training young artists with taxpayer money is "cultural reforestation." The poor are now "socioeconomically disadvantaged." The dull-witted are "maturationally disadvantaged." Those of short stature are "vertically disadvantaged." And lonely people are "stimulationally impoverished." In the curious Neoliberal world of universal victimhood, everyone is handicapped to one extent or another except those people who happen to have been born White and male.

While striving to give almost everyone a 'legitimate' handicap, the social engineers attempt to eradicate any and all differences between the sexes. These "gender benders" have produced lists of artificial pronouns and other words that attempt to completely erase any reference whatever to the 'gender persuasion' of those being referred to.

Curiously, none of those who attempt this semantic wizardry can produce a legitimate reason for doing so.

Some of these 'neutered' words are shown below. This is not a joke; these are actual proposals set forth by various Neoliberals.[2]

EXAMPLES OF PROPOSED PRONOUN NEUTERING

he, she . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."e," "hesh" "ter," "tey," "tem"

seminar . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "ovular"

It is very amusing to read Neofeminist periodicals like Ms. Magazine to get an idea of how biased are the terms used to describe identical traits found in both men and women.

The table below shows how Neofeminist authors often unwittingly reflect their misandry (hate of men) in what they write.

HOW NEOFEMINISTS USE BIASED TERMS TO DESCRIBE IDENTICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MEN AND WOMEN

If She Is ...                                                                                He Is ...

"Savvy" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  "A 'dirty player"
"Aggressive" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."A bully"
"Visionary" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Self-deceiving, unrealistic"
"Self-confident, self-assured" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Arrogant"
"Discerning" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Judgmental, intolerant"
"Witty" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Snide, sarcastic"
"Empowered" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Oppressive"
"Dedicated, persistent" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."Fanatical"
"Sexually active" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."Predatory"
"Realistic" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."Stereotyping"
"Relaxed" . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Sloppy, disrespectful" Í

Of course, Neofeminists tend to be a bit selective about which nouns need to be the subject of gendercide. Why haven't they changed "hysterectomy" to "herstorectomy" and "menstruation" to "herstoration?"

For more detailed information on the semanticide practiced by many Neofeminists, see Chapter 129 of Volume III, "Neofeminism."

Perhaps pro-lifers should not be too hard on others for using useless, fluffy words, because all activists sometimes fall into this habit as well. We should learn a lesson from this: That those who are constrained to domicile within structures of potent frangibility should in no account employ petreous formations as projectiles.[5]

Genocidal Newspeak: Then and Now.

Verbal engineering always precedes social engineering.

                                                              Former abortionist Bernard Nathanson, M.D.

Overview.

Bureaucratic Newspeak can be either a bad habit or an attempt to impress people. The purpose of genocidal Newspeak is far more sinister: To disable effective opposition to mass killing.

The National Socialists and Newspeak.

The Nazis diligently exploited genocidal Newspeak's great potential. In Germany, the organizations that selected people for death were entitled "The Realm's Committee for Scientific Approach to Severe Illness Due to Heredity and Constitution" and the "Committee for Research on Hereditary Diseases and Constitutional Susceptibility to Severe Diseases."

Thousands of children were killed by the "Reich Committee for Children." Unfortunate Jews and gypsies were hauled to concentration camps in filthy, unventilated boxcars by the "Non-Profit Patient Transport Corporation," and their passage was funded by collections from their relatives by the "Charitable Foundation for Institutional Care."[6]

And the "Charitable Transport Company for the Sick" conveyed "human weeds" to "processing facilities" so that "life devoid of value" could be "released."

That sure sounds better than herding millions of Jews into cattle cars so they could be dragged into gas chambers and slaughtered, doesn't it?

Latter-Day Verbal Engineers.

Totalitarians (whether they be governments in power or groups of outside agitators) have always recognized and exploited Newspeak for all it is worth. Inevitably, as with other sciences, the use of Newspeak has become more and more refined and effective through the ages.

Heinrich Himmler would be proud of latter-day Newspeak engineers. In today's world, the torture and slaughter of thousands in the slave labor camps of the Gulag and Vietnam is called "re-education." Terrorists are elevated to the status of "freedom fighters." Thugs belong to units with names like "The Dignity Battalions." The obliteration of rural villages is "pacification." The herding of vast numbers of indigenous tribespeople into sterile wastelands is called "frontier adjustment."

Our own Central Intelligence Agency's "skunk works" calls its poison darts "non-discernable microbiological inoculators." And, perhaps most incredibly, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) slang for an exploding nuclear bomb is "a bucket of sunshine."

Similar language has being used in our country for the last 25 years to numb millions of consciences to the atrocities of mass murder in the forms of abortion and euthanasia. In fact, the pro-abortionists are currently trying to muddy the waters yet more by adding a fourth slogan to the three on Big Brother's Ministry of Truth Building;

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
PRO-CHOICE IS PRO-LIFE

Medical professionals clearly recognize the key role of Newspeak in the New Holocaust. Before the killing began in earnest, the prestigious journal California Medicine realized that the first step in enabling the slaughter must be the revision of language;

The reverence for each and every human life has been the keystone of Western medicine, and is the ethic which has caused physicians to try to preserve, protect, repair, prolong, and enhance every human life.

Since the old ethic has not yet been fully displaced, it has been necessary to separate the idea of abortion from the idea of killing, which continues to be socially abhorrent. The result has been a curious avoidance of the scientific fact, which everyone really knows, that human life begins at conception and is continuous whether intra- or extra-uterine until death. The very considerable semantic gymnastics which are required to rationalize abortion as anything but taking a human life would be ludicrous if they were not often put forth under socially impeccable auspices.

It is suggested that this schizophrenic sort of subterfuge is necessary because, while a new ethic is being accepted, the old one has not yet been fully rejected.[7]

Why Do We Use (and Tolerate) Newspeak?

Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

                                                                                                Matthew 12:36.

The "Little Voice."

Even Nazis and abortionists possess consciences. These hardened mass killers harbor a troublesome little voice which constantly reminds them that they are sinning heinously. They are committing acts so unnatural, loathsome, and unjustifiable that they must ruthlessly suppress the little voice that bothers them so much. As British author Sir Arthur Helps wisely counseled, "It is an error to suppose that no man understands his own character. Most persons know even their failings very well, only they persist in giving them names different from those usually assigned by the rest of the world."[8]

This is why the Nazis employed Newspeak half a century ago, and this is why pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia killers use it now. The deeper the little voice is buried, the better the abortionists and the euthanasiasts and their obedient slaves feel.

Suppressing the Truth.

Of course, deep down in their hearts, every pro-abortionist knows the truth that he is killing babies or supporting such killing. Nobody is stupid or blind enough to really believe otherwise.

This is why every pure and innocent three-year old knows on sight that an unborn baby is really a baby, and not a blob. Newspeak allows pro-aborts to "unlearn" this common-sense knowledge and shield their consciences.

And this is why many pro-aborts go literally insane with anger and rage when a pro-lifer boldly speaks the truth before them. The angriest pro-aborts are, strangely, the easiest to reach with the truth because they are having the most trouble suppressing their "little voice." Their consciences are pained. They don't want to face the truth because it hurts.

Many pro-aborts have become pro-life, and they all agree that the conversion process is painful. The identical unpleasant process occurs when a "do-nothing" fence-sitting Christian who has anesthetized his conscience finally takes concrete action against evil.

Conversely, the coolest and most self-controlled pro-aborts are those who have most successfully suppressed their consciences. These are the people who can examine any amount of medical and statistical evidence and remain pro-abortion. Most frightening of all, these are the people who admit to killing unborn children and have no qualms about it, merely because it is legal.

The abortionists and their slavish followers are the true moral descendants of the Nazi Schutzstaffel the dreaded SS killers of World War II.

Newspeak: Engine of the Sexual Revolution.

But as the rigid [sexual conduct] code relaxed, new concepts evolved. At the same time vocabulary was altered: Perversions became abnormalities, abnormalities became deviancies, deviancies became variations, variations became options, options became preferences, preferences became choices, and choices became life-enhancing experiences.

                                                                                     Lester A. Kirkendall.[9]

Newspeak is an extremely powerful weapon precisely because it is so subtle and works to disarm the target audience without injuring its individual members. In fact, Newspeak causes the target audience to become implicated in the specific evil being addressed, because the people naturally feel guilty for not taking action against it. In other words, the audience, by its inaction, is given a vested interest in the evil act.

Newspeak is so versatile that it has been used to justify not only abortion, but has 'greased the skids' for the entire Sexual Revolution and all of its entrained evils. The "old" words that baldly stated the truth were "inhibiting progress" and were making people feel uncomfortable, so they were discarded.

These precise terms were replaced with compassionate, nonjudgmental 'feel-good' words that allowed those who participated in intrinsically evil acts, from abortion to pornography, to feel good about themselves and salve their aching or benumbed consciences. Just a few examples are shown below.

Contemporary Newspeak by the Social Engineers.

Their throat is an empty grave; with their tongue they speak deceit. Declare them guilty, O God!

                                                                                                       Psalms 5:9.

Avoiding the Reality.

The so-called "women's rights" movement is supposedly based on honesty, i.e.: "telling it like it is."

In reality, however, the Neofeminists are the most dishonest people in the world with others, and, more importantly, with themselves. The following examples of pro-abortion Newspeak show just how severely the 'abortion-rights' movement is afflicted with an ingrained need to assuage its guilt and avoid reality. These examples show the twisted manner in which pro-abortion activists use everyday words to deceive, sidetrack, and hoodwink the public.

Dehumanizing the Preborn.

Nowhere is Newspeak more prevalent than when pro-abortionists are dehumanizing their innocent victims.

This type of dehumanization not only allows the abortionists and their supporters to justify their bloody killing, it also allows them to perpetrate every imaginable kind of atrocity on their helpless victims.

In one particularly grisly incident, a horrified nurse observed a "doctor" ransacking the body of a living, unanesthetized, late-term baby. She described the procedure: "They took the fetus and cut its belly open. They said they wanted its liver. They carried the baby out of the incubator and it was still alive. It was a boy. It had a complete body, with hands, feet, mouth and ears. It was even secreting urine." The "researcher," a Dr. Kekomaki, sliced the belly of the baby open and cut out its organs without even giving the little boy the mercy of an anesthetic. When a reporter asked him to justify this atrocity, Kekomaki retorted that "An aborted baby is just garbage."[10]

Other blatant examples of Newspeak applied to the preborn by the abortionists and their supporters are shown in Figure 15-1.

Other Pro-Abortion Newspeak.

In Canada, a man who tries in any manner to prevent his own wife from killing his own preborn child may be aggressively prosecuted under the Criminal Code for failing to provide the "necessities of life" to his wife (if she is not employed outside the home) by failing to pay for the "necessary medical treatment" of abortion! Under the same Code, parents have been prosecuted for "child neglect" for failing to pay for their daughter's abortion(s), regardless of their beliefs on the subject. Any parents who even attempt to talk their daughter out of killing her child (their grandchild) may lose her to the voracious provincial child care authorities.[11]

Abortion clinics even use Newspeak to name their killing centers. In Florida, there is the Orlando Birthing Center where no births only abortions are performed; in Oregon, there is the Lovejoy Surgicenter, where neither love nor joy will be found; in Missouri, Parents Aid aids people in avoiding parenthood; in Chicago, Family Guidance guides people in preventing families; Pre-Term in Cleveland and Pre-Birth in Chicago facilitate no births just abortions; also in Chicago, Friendship Medical Center will take your money, but don't be foolish enough to ask them to be your friend. Finally, TLC Women's Services in Manhattan will not show your unborn baby much Tender Loving Care!

Other abortion mills are named Pregnancy Control (Fort Worth); Female Services (Houston); Surgical Arts (Memphis); Pregnancy Alternative (Portland, Oregon); and New Woman Health Care (Birmingham, Alabama).[12]

Betraying the strong link between abortion and infanticide, a physician at the University of Virginia Medical School told The New York Times Magazine that allowing babies with Down Syndrome to die was "a woman's second chance to have an abortion." This same doctor stated that "Prenatal death does not constitute a harm, nor does the prenatal termination of the fetus' life through induced abortion constitute an injury."[13]

In New York State at one time, a pregnant minor could not get Medicaid funds in certain instances if she walked into a clinic and said "I want an abortion," because the Medicaid program was intended to help minors get prenatal care. However, all the teenager had to do was tell the clinic worker that she was applying for an abortion "on behalf of the unborn!"

The most common term used by pro-abortionists for the slaughter of the preborn is "termination of pregnancy." If the same type of nomenclature is used for other situations, this Newspeak is exposed as the nonsense it truly is. For example, killing a spouse could be called "termination of marriage;" the killing of a worker could be labeled "termination of employment;" and a landlord who killed a tenant could say that he had merely "terminated his lease."

The Conclusion.

Both the National Socialist (Nazi) movement and the pro-abortion movement used nice-sounding words to salve the consciences of their respective publics. The average German knew precisely what was going on. And so does the average American. But the average German was afraid to take action. And so is the average American. The public, just as much as the killers, uses these terms to give itself an excuse not to stop the killing. The average do-nothing "Christian" uses these words when he talks about abortion with other average do-nothing "Christians."

Notably, both the Nazis and the American pro-abortion movement use inflammatory Newspeak as propaganda for the purpose of habitually degrading and dehumanizing both their victims and their opposition.

The words employed by the Nazis and the pro-abortionists to label the essential elements of their respective Holocausts the victims, the killing, the killers, the killing places, and the opposition are shown in Figure 15-2. The similarities are absolutely striking.

NEWSPEAK USED BY PRO-ABORTIONISTS TO DEHUMANIZE PREBORN BABIES

Up to the point at which the embryo has not developed a nervous system, it has not developed the capacity to feel pain or feel anything, has no degree of consciousness and no sensory awareness. I believe, in terms of its rights or moral status, it doesn't even reach the level of the standard laboratory mammal. It's more like a vegetative existence, a lettuce, if you like.

'Bioethicist' Peter Singer, quoted in the Sydney Daily Telegraph, August 25, 1986, and in "IVF Ethics or Spinach?" ALL About Issues, November-December 1986, page 53.

The relationship between the gravid female and the feto-placental unit can be understood best as one of host and parasite ... Pregnancy should be seen as a biocultural event in the context of other human illnesses.

It's difficult to pull apart a chicken when it is newly killed. You have to cook it first, and then it comes apart very easily. It's the same here [when doing a late-term abortion].

The umbilical cord is cut on the first day, and, after the preborn baby dies and begins to decay, the abortionist pulls it apart.

The saline termination has the effect of inducing a miscarriage. The more lengthy the pregnancy, the more fetal material there is to be aborted. Under the best conditions, the patient is attended by a nurse who receives the aborted material immediately and removes it from the patient. It is not uncommon, however, for a patient to abort unattended by a nurse or other attendant and to do so in her bed. The nurse usually responds promptly to a call from the patient and removes the abortice.

For the most part it [fetal remains] is thrown out like in many doctors' offices. If you had a wart removed or whatever (chuckle) you could make that analogy.

The Supreme Court placed the decision to end a pregnancy, like that to remove a wart or straighten a nose, in the hands of the patient and her doctor.

A popular medical dictionary defines "disease" as "literally, the lack of ease," venereal disease as "one usually transmitted through sexual intercourse." It's obvious, therefore, that unwanted pregnancy is the most common venereal disease ... This disease is associated with immense suffering. Seeking to be cured of this disease, women from time have risked pain, mutilation, and death in numbers that really stagger the imagination.

We are still unable to put babies in the class of dangerous epidemics, even though that is the exact truth.

Dr. Mary S. Calderone, former Medical Director of Planned Parenthood and the founder of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), quoted in Medical Morals Newsletter, February-March 1968.

Is adolescent pregnancy a disease? We have laws regarding other epidemics. We have mandatory immunizations, but we have no law prohibiting motherhood before the age of 14 in our supposedly-civilized society. We ought to mandate against continuing pregnancy in the very young say, those less than 14 years.

Using Newspeak to Stereotype the Enemy.

From a social point of view, these people who want to forcibly take away a woman's right to abortion are nothing but vicious, rabid dogs.

                                                 Revolutionary Communist Party of the United States.[14]

Introduction.

Make no mistake; we are engaged in outright war against the vast anti-life complex of abortionists, sex perverts, pornographers, eugenicists, and euthanasiasts.

One of the most important tactics of warfare is to enable the public and the troops to hate the enemy. And the easiest and most effective way to accomplish this is to dehumanize and stereotype him. It is much easier to hate and to fight and to kill an enemy that you perceive as inhuman or inferior to yourself.

Stereotyping Then.

During the slavery era, White slave owners referred to Blacks as "animals," "lustful demons," and "dregs of humanity," and considered them "exactly intermediate between the superior order of beasts such as elephant, dog, and orangutan, and European or White men."[15]

Other slave owners referred to the slave's "ignorance," "brutality," "obscenity," "animal appetite," "viciousness," and "illegitimacy," and called them "ignorant," "perverse," "wicked," "the pest of the White man," and "agents of Satan."[15]

During wars, American soldiers have referred to the enemy as "Japs," "greasers," "slants," "wops," "krauts," and "gooks."

The Nazis used both institutional and genocidal Newspeak in their extermination programs. They referred to Jews as "human ballast," "garbage," "human weeds," "empty shells," and "infections." Jews and others not of Aryan ancestry or quality "... had to be treated like tuberculosis bacilli, with which a healthy body may become infested. This was not cruel, if one remembers that even innocent creatures of nature, such as hares and deer, have to be killed, so that no harm is caused by them."[6]

Adolf Hitler, in his book Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"), referred to Jews as "maggots in a rotting corpse;" "a plague worse than the Black Death;" "mankind's eternal germ of disunion;" "drones in the human hive;" "spiders sucking blood out of the people's pores;" "a pack of rats eating one another;" "the eternal bloodsucker;" "the vampire of peoples;" and "a harmful bacillus that spreads," among many other degrading terms.

The Nazis referred to their extermination of the Jews as "resettlement;" "evacuation;" "clearing the area(s) of Jews;" "cleansing," "disinfection," "special treatment," "moving to labor in the East," "injecting off," "putting to sleep like animals," "discharging," "the clean-up of the Jewish question," and "the final solution to the Jewish question."[6]

Stereotyping Now.

To the dismay of thinking Americans, our society seems to have forgotten the hard lessons dealt us by the past. As American philosopher George Santayana so rightly states, "Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it."

We obviously have not learned our lessons from the past. Today, more than ever before, there is a proliferation of instances where groups of people stereotype others for the purposes of abusing or killing them.

Men who use women as subjects for rape, pornography and degradation have always referred to them as "products," "b_tches," "sluts," and "nice little pieces of tail." Not surprisingly, 2 Live Crew, Niggaz With Attitude (NWA), Andrew Dice Clay ("The Diceman"), and many other very popular 'performers' now routinely refer to women in such a manner.

Euthanasiasts routinely refer to profoundly handicapped people as "vegetables," "mere collections of organs," "post-human," and "technological artifices." Persons in intensive care units (ICUs) whom physicians consider 'hopeless cases' are called "GORKS" (God Only Really Knows) or "GOMERS" (Get Out of My Emergency Room). When these unfortunate people die, they have experienced not death, but a "negative patient care outcome" or, if such deaths are caused by the actions of physicians, "therapeutic misadventures."

As far as abortion is concerned, the Neoliberals have two enemies the unborn child and their protectors, the pro-life activists. And so, they dehumanize the unborn, and they attempt, with the willing complicity of the press, to dehumanize pro-lifers as well.

Logically, the greater the threat posed by a group of people, the more dehumanizing the terms applied to them by their exterminators. The preborn must certainly be a threat to barren-souled women and their sterile male 'partners,' who routinely dehumanize them with amazing vitriol and imagination;[6]

• "Abortus, conceptus;"
• "Alpha" (Bernard Nathanson);
• "Blob of tissue;"
• "Child-to-be" (Glanville Williams);
• "Child-Who-Might-Have-Been" (James Kidd);
• "Chunk of tissue" (Sarah Weddington);
• "Collection of cells" and "the conception" (Malcolm Potts);
• "Communicable disease" (Elizabeth Connell of the Association of Planned
   Parenthood Physicians);
• "Contents of the uterus;"
• "Defective life" (Family Planning Perspectives);
• "Embryonic debris" and "rubbery dumpling" (A Woman's Book of
   Choices);
• "Morally equal to fingernail clippings or warts" (Planned Parenthood);
• "Fallopian and uterine cell matter" ('ethicist' Joseph Fletcher)
• "Feto-placental unit" (Warren Hern);
• "Gametic materials" (Joseph Fletcher);
• "Garbage" (Peter Stanley);
• "Gobbet of meat protruding from a womb" (Philip Wylie);
• "Group of specialized cells" (Alan Guttmacher);
• "Hateful, vile plague" ("Abortion Eve" comic book);
• "Live human material" (Malcolm Potts);
• "Marmalade" (abortionist Bill Baird);
• "Mass of protoplasm;"
• "Parasites, leeches;"
• "Part of the mother" (Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes);
• "Potential life" (Justice Harry Blackmun);
• "Protoplasmic rubbish;"
• "Sub-human non-personhood" (F. Raymond Marks);
• "Unwanted fetal tissue" (Ellen Frankfort); and
• "A venereal disease" (Barbara Roberts, M.D.).

Magda Denes, writing about work in an abortion hospital, showed how such language can numb the soul when she remarked that "When, under one roof, the number of dead fetuses mounts into the thousands, the simple fact of death gradually overshadows the significance of individual histories."[16]

Significantly, this statement is essentially identical to Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's observation that "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic."[8]

Some abortionists cannot even tolerate the feel-good Newspeak terms for abortion, so they insulate themselves with a double layer of self-deception in the form of acronyms, referring to abortion as MR (menstrual regulation) and VIP (voluntary interruption of pregnancy), and the preborn baby as a POC (product of conception).

Pro-life activists are not perceived to be as great a threat as the unborn, but are still routinely labeled;

• "Ayatollah Khomeini clones" (Bill Baird);
• "Destroyers of freedom and the Constitution;"
• "Drooling androids" (abortion lawyer Ed Tiryak);
• "Enemies of women (misogynists);"
• "Hysterical Bible-beaters;"
• "Non-progressives;"
• "Oppressors of women;"
• "Reactionary elements" (People's Daily World);
• "Small but vocal minority;"
• "Terrorists;"
• "Vicious, rabid dogs" (Revolutionary Worker); and
• "Violent maniacs" (just about everyone).

However, most of the pro-abortion propaganda directed against pro-lifers is much more subtle. The so-called "artist's community" is, with few exceptions, uniformly pro-abortion and pro-sodomite, and it uses its accumulated talents to dehumanize pro-lifers in very crafty ways.

The following poem is one typical example. Notice the poem's emphasis on freedom and the false assumptions and stereotypes made about pro-lifers. Wrapped in kind and progressive words, the poem subtly suggests that abortion is a minor matter and anyone who opposes it must be somehow brain-damaged or under the influence of some kind of evil spell.

AN EXAMPLE OF PRO-ABORTION STEREOTYPING

"Ella's Abortion"

when ella had her abortion she sighed in relief, handed on the cross, thanked her god for taking that burden; she was free to weave her individual cloth.

for several years she danced, cloud innocent of the ghost that followed her. no need to look over a twitching shoulder or turn a hair, in this life of smiling blindness.

but two years ago the polyester/red rose brigade showed her the error of her ways. pictures: tiny shell feet doll ears breath as dainty and real as any white flower. all these clouded her vision, drummed blood in her ears

tied her brain closed with fine silk hair.

when she looks over her weighted shoulder waiting monsters loom in whispering shadows, knives are ready for her brain.

little girls haunt in pink booties zoom across a grey horizon. red roses use their thorns.

now her mind is bloodclotted her heart curetted of all feeling,

the monster lives from her death.

now ella too                       wears a red flower

carries a placard stating

life must go on                    it's wrong to kill.

the worm of power             fills her heart

Reaching the Media.

If language is incorrect, then what is said is not meant. If what is said is not meant, then what ought to be done remains undone.

Confucius.[3]

The Media: Agents of Social Change.

It is interesting to note that the language of the pro-abortion media invariably departs from soothing Newspeak and becomes positively incandescent when it attacks pro-life activists. In virtually every secular publication (and quite a few religious ones, too), pro-lifers are described as "harassing," "intimidating," "anti-choice," "violent," and so on.

Why are pro-life activists subject to these lies and unfair treatment?

Quite simply, because the press describes itself as overwhelmingly (more than 90 percent) pro-abortion, and sees itself as a powerful engine of social change.

This is not pro-life paranoia at work: The extensive Lichter-Rothman study, and subsequent confirming studies by media researchers themselves, have shown that the press is almost uniformly Neoliberal and pro-abortion. The Lichter-Rothman study's findings are summarized below. For more information on the pervasive media pro-abortion bias, see Chapter 126 of Volume III.

THE MEDIA'S SELF-DESCRIBED POSITION ON ABORTION

Television elite:          97% describe themselves as pro-abortion.
Movie elite:               96% describe themselves as pro-abortion.
Media elite:               90% describe themselves as pro-abortion.

The media knows that it is perhaps the only entity keeping the people from rising up en masse and putting a stop to the slaughter of the innocents. How much stronger would the pro-life movement be if Dr. Bernard Nathanson's jarring film "Eclipse of Reason" were shown just once on national television?

The pro-abortionists are assisted eagerly by the media as they work ceaselessly to sanitize the filthy profession of baby-killing for public consumption. For example, a group of individuals from the publications Life, Cosmopolitan, The New York Times, and (no kidding), Good Housekeeping recently circulated the following list of 'subjective' (bad) and 'objective' (good) words that they said should be used in the abortion debate. This list was sent to hundreds of editors all over the country, many of whom obediently implemented the 'suggested' changes.

It is significant indeed that Adolf Hitler's Minister of Propaganda circulated among the national media a similar list at the beginning of the Nazi euthanasia program. The purpose of that list was also to numb the public conscience to the killing.

Et Tu, Encyclopedia Britannica?

It is very interesting to watch language "evolve" to meet social requirements. Nowhere has this phenomenon been more evident than in the field of the life issues. After all, in order to oppress and kill people, society must change its attitude towards its intended victims.

Alan Guttmacher, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, stated in 1961 when speaking of human reproduction that "Fertilization, then, has taken place; a baby has been conceived."[17] Seven years later, he had taken control of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and had determined that the time was right to push abortion. He said in 1968 that "My feeling is that the fetus, particularly during its intrauterine life, is merely a group of specialized cells that do not differ materially from other cells."[18]

Did the learned Dr. Guttmacher stumble onto some startling new knowledge that he did not receive in medical school? Was there some important revolution in fetology during the seven years between 1961 and 1968?

Of course not!

All that had changed was Guttmacher's attitude towards the preborn. The information and data were the same; the technology was the same; only his motivations had changed.

Even the staff of that bastion of supposed dispassionate and neutral logic, the Encyclopedia Britannica, has been mesmerized by the new wave of euphemisms. The 1945 Edition, under the heading "Abortion," included the following sentence; " ... Indeed, the tendency in Continental Europe is to regard abortion as a crime against the unborn child ... "

By 1980, this entry had been properly modernized and sanitized; "Abortion is the expulsion of the fetus before it has reached a stage of development sufficient to permit it to live outside the uterus."

Note that the Encyclopedia Britannica staff, in its rush to be inoffensive, has sacrificed accuracy for smoothness: In all countries where it is legal, abortion is performed even after viability.

How Can We Fight Newspeak?

The first casualty of any war is truth.

                                                                                          Senator Hiram Johnson.

Newspeak is to communication what barnacles are to a ship's hull. Newspeak encrusts and loads down our language and greatly decreases the efficiency of our communication. It is also a very powerful weapon that is used to enable the killing of human beings.

Ever since Plato remarked that confusing language is a powerful tool for oppression, thinking people have striven to rid their language of Newspeak. Before we can condemn the opposition, we must therefore replace our own Newspeak and Femspeak with "Lifespeak." We must rip aside the enervating shroud of imprecise language and proclaim the truth so that people can see it clearly. We must tirelessly poke at sleeping consciences and refuse to play the Newspeak "game."

When someone refers to a person in a dehumanizing way, we should treat it as a form of racism. We must refuse to use words like "persistent vegetative state," and we should correct others who do so, because it will cause them to consider the language they use.

Additionally, if people insist upon dressing up some gross sexual perversion in the frills of pretty language, we must ask them to clarify their terms. For example, if someone refers to a person as "gay," we might ask them if the person being referred to has a happy and carefree personality, or if he is a sex pervert. This will cause some shock and hard feelings, but such is always the case when attempting to penetrate the curtain of words with which we insulate ourselves from reality.

We are all guilty of conning ourselves and others from time to time by telling half-truths and using exaggeration. As Benjamin Franklin said, "The brain is a wonderful mechanism, and its most awesome ability is its capacity to deceive itself."

Only when people begin to speak plainly again will we be able to make meaningful progress towards protecting the helpless.

A GUIDE TO PRO-ABORTION NEWSPEAK

All who discuss abortion rights must be held accountable for their words. To mislead and manipulate the public is dishonest. There is no room for dishonesty in the sensitive discussion of abortion.

                                                                   'Religious' Coalition for Abortion Rights.[19]

The following is a tongue-in-cheek guide to about a hundred pro-abortion definitions as they apply to everyday words. A quick glance at any piece of pro-abortion literature will reveal that these Newspeak phrases and words saturate every sentence. As odd as these definitions may sound upon first reading, they accurately reflect the true meaning behind the pro-abortion slogans and phrases we hear so much.

Abortion: a word that the members of the sympathetic, progressive, non-judgmental community try to avoid, lest it cause trauma to those women who have exercised their Constitutionally-mandated right to choose. We prefer to call it post-fertility conception interruption (a Planned Parenthood term), evacuation of the uterine contents, or something which sounds warm and fuzzy like that.

Abortionist: a judgmental, finger-pointing term used by right-wing fanatics to describe a woman's choice physician. This term should only be used when describing events that occurred before 1970, and should never be used without the prefixes "back-alley" or "illegal," and must be used in conjunction with a horror story about a woman dying of an unsafe, pre-legal abortion.

Agree to Disagree: we have debated this subject, and, unfortunately, you have thrashed me in front of an audience, so I am going to demonstrate my inherent pro-choice open-mindedness by publicly announcing that I am not going to change my mind on anything. So there!

AIDS: one of a wholly undeserved group of sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) affecting primarily our noble gay brothers. An affliction which will be eradicated any day now by an aggressive campaign of sex education as early as possible, along with frank public announcements and the careful use of condoms (Planned Parenthood said so). Be careful not to mention that no society has ever completely eradicated any STD.

Anti-Semitism: the belief that Jews are somehow subhuman and present a threat to society (and more-developed races) because of their inferior status. This type of discrimination is currently unfashionable. A progressive who wants to participate in politically correct discrimination should involve himself in Christophobia or Fundiphobia.

Baby ("B-word"): Only those post-born human beings who are thinking, rational persons that possess a high enough degree of quality of life (we pro-choice and pro-euthanasia activists reserve the right to change this definition at any time in order to suit our own purposes).

Bestiphobia: an affliction peculiar to those narrow-minded individuals who frown upon the genuine expression of love between human beings and other species (usually mammalian). Bestiphobes are by definition species-istic, and are blind to how broad our union is to all living things in the greater scheme of theagenesis and Gaia. The proper term for sex between people and other animals is "interspecies love."

Bigotry: any action or thought that in any way denigrates the actions or lifestyle of sodomites, lesbians, abortionists, transvestites, pedophiles, and other moderate members of our society. Of course, ridicule and hate of fundamentalists, conservative Catholics, and anyone else who opposes us is exempt from this definition (see, for example, "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence" or "The Last Temptation of Christ"). In fact, no progressive freethinker is capable of bigotry. We refer to our own bigots as "gentle but angry people."

Breed: describes how ignorant anti-choice fanatics selfishly exercise their reproductive rights by having two or even three children, in complete disregard for our pure and natural environment. We have not figured out how they do this, since Planned Parenthood says that they all despise women and hate their own sexuality. In any case, we hold up the shining example of the family planning program in the People's Republic of China as a model for the entire world to emulate as we unite in the struggle to follow the path charted by Chairman Mao!

Chilling Effect: what any legal action taken against us causes. The identical legal actions taken against our opposition is referred to as "balancing rights."

Church Community: the caring, flexible, progressive, non-judgmental, non-sexist part of the body of Christ (i.e., us).

Clinic Escort: a sympathetic, caring person who safeguards the right to choose abortion and insures that clients have access to informed consent (see "Informed Consent").

Clinic Violence: describes all of the offensive, intimidating, disgusting actions of anti-choice fanatics outside an abortion clinic. Of course, we all know that there is no violence involved in the decapitation, dismemberment, burning and crushing of more than a million babies (oops, "blobs of protoplasm") inside the clinics each year (this is called "reproductive choice").

Consensus: we have a poll performed by one of our special-interest groups using our biased questions that shows that our members think the way they should on this issue. Of course, it is theoretically impossible for you conservatives to attain a consensus, because, no matter how perverted the act you are talking about, at least one of our members will enjoy it and object to your proposed limitations.

Conspiracy: any activity in which ignorant anti-choice fanatics cooperate in forging a strategy to deprive desperately poor women of their necessary, Goddess-given and Constitutional rights. This is referred to as "networking" or "empowering" when done by noble workers in the struggle for women's reproductive rights.

Court-Packing: when a right-wing ideological president like Ronald Reagan or George Bush crams the Supreme Court with reactionary, anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-affirmative action Fascists. When progressives like Bill Clinton demand a litmus test on abortion and then crowd the Supreme Court with jurists who reflect our own liberal views, we refer to it as "balancing the Court." By definition, we can never have a balanced Supreme Court unless liberals hold at least a 7-2 majority.

Crisis: any situation where the public does not agree with us that there is a real emergency, but where we need to create hysteria in order to paint our opposition as backwards, reactionary, and stubborn. Examples: the "overpopulation crisis," the "teen pregnancy crisis," and the "AIDS crisis."

Demonstration: an unruly riot by people whose philosophy you agree with. An example would be the ACT-UP invasion and desecration of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. When the opposition holds a peaceful picket, we call it "clinic violence."

Diversity: what we Neoliberals honor above all: legitimate lifestyle expressions, including lesbianism, homosexuality, bestiality, transsexualism, transvestitism, pedophilia, vegisexualism, and geosexualism. Of course, any right-wing lifestyle expression such as chastity and marital fidelity limits diversity and should therefore be censured as a true perversion.

Don't Force Your Morality On Me: don't tell me that I'm doing something wrong as a New Age, enlightened, progressive free thinker, I'm not capable of wrongdoing. The concept of sin is just a feeble attempt by right wing fanatics to lay a guilt trip on me. Meanwhile, of course, we liberals can force our own morality off on others with various quotas, 'sensitivity training,' and restrictions on any speech we consider inappropriate. This is called "pluralism."

Emotional Issue: characterization of a political issue-centered campaign favored by conservatives. The same type of campaign favored by liberals is referred to as "a matter of principle."

Fanatic: any person who opposes us. The term we apply to a pro-choice activist is "dedicated worker in the noble struggle for women's rights."

Fetus: our word for "nigger."

Fraudulent Clinic: curious (but useful) double standard that condemns Crisis Pregnancy Centers for advertising in the Yellow Pages under "Abortion," while allowing abortion mills to advertise under names such as "Reproductive Health Center," "Friendship Center," "New Woman Clinic," and "Preterm Institute."

Fundamentalist: a rigid, dogmatic person who mindlessly follows the arbitrary dictates of a vengeful God; this person, who may be from any religion, has a simplistic worldview, is always judgmental, and cannot think for him(her)self. Anyone with 'morals' (an outdated, dogmatic concept).

Gay: happy, well-adjusted people whose inborn sexual preference just happens to be for people of the same sex. We never mention the practices the gender-benders engage in, or their extraordinarily high rates of drug and alcohol addiction, venereal diseases, mental diseases, suicide, murder, incest, rape, and child molestation. Only gays who want to change their lifestyle are unhappy and maladjusted.

Genocide: the targeting of any class of people for eradication. We abhor genocide if it is practiced by the Right and we ignore it if practiced by the Left (i.e., Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and the extremely high rate of abortions performed on "women of color" in this country).

God (Preferably Goddess): a benign being who doesn't interfere with our personal decisions and who is too kind and sweet to condemn anyone to a nonexistent place called Hell (which we all know is on earth, anyway). The only persons who anger Her are those ignorant, judgmental, finger-pointing lunatics who are forever trying to sabotage our noble struggle for lesbian, gay, pedophile, and abortion rights.

Good Catholic: similar to the "I'm as good as you are" phenomenon. Describes pick-and-choose, or "cafeteria Catholics." Examples of "Good Catholics" are Ellie Smeal, Mary Ann Sorrentino, Charlie Curran, and Ted Kennedy (D.-Olt).

Good Christian: anyone who can find the rights to abortion and sodomy in the Bible.

Growth: for a rigid, dogmatic, judgmental, finger-pointing, legalistic person to submit to the process of transforming him(her) self into a caring, flexible, compassionate, sympathetic, nonjudgmental free-thinker (like me).

Harassment: any effective anti-choice tactic. This term is interchangeable with "terrorism," "rescuing," "sidewalk counseling," and "picketing."

Hierarchical Church: the rigid, simplistic, monolithic, insensitive, judgmental, sexist juggernaut which sweeps before it all sensitive, non-judgmental, progressive citizens and organizations, and tramples underfoot our gay, lesbian, abortion, and pedophile rights.

Informed Consent: making certain that a woman makes the right decision when faced with an unwanted pregnancy (i.e., abortion).

Intolerance: the only real sin.

Keep Your Laws Off My Body: something to chant when we can't think of anything intelligent to say (which is often). Most effective when shouted loudly and repeatedly, with hands over ears.

Mantra: powerful mental 'centering' tool used to defend ourselves against unwanted psychic interference. Our collective pro-choice mantra is "eye doanwan two he rit" (or some variation), repeated over and over, until the user achieves the desired divine state of blissful ignorance.

Medieval [Neanderthal, Dogmatic, etc.]: anyone who stands up for their beliefs or their faith.

Moderate: term preferred over the word "Liberal." A moderate supports abortion on demand, sado-masochism, transvestitism, gay rights, animal rights, the efficient Chinese population control program, vegetable rights, mineral rights, and anything but the rights of the preborn and Right-wingers. We say that these people "vote their conscience," "surprise friend and foe alike," are "refreshingly independent," "conservative but not ideological," or "issue-oriented." Those activists and politicians who do not believe in the above Goddess-given rights are referred to as "radical right-wing ideologues," "extreme," "divisive," or "members of a fringe element."

Morals: a laughably outdated concept, discarded by progressive and forward-looking freethinkers along with other such outmoded ideas as Responsibility and Sin. If we must use the distasteful term "morals," we define it as the body of opinions that you have developed throughout your life experience in other words, "where you're at."

Networking: any activity in which noble workers in the struggle for women's rights cooperate in forging a strategy to sweep anti-choice fanatics back into the void where they belong (this activity does not necessarily involve an exchange of bodily fluids). "Conspiracy" when committed by anti-choice fanatics.

Non-Judgmental: where we make our naivete and inexperience into a virtue as we cripple the most effective methods of combatting health crises by assuring those who are affected that it really isn't their fault, that they can do absolutely nothing about their situation, and that society is committing genocide against their certified 'victim group' by not immediately giving in to their every demand.

NORPLANT: a miracle contraceptive that pulled the United States out of the Dark Ages of birth control. Will be effectively used to sterilize poor women (whether they want it or not), in order to relieve us of the trouble of caring for all of their squalling brats.

Overpopulation: a proliferation of other races, particularly in Third World nations like China and Ethiopia. The term we use when describing an increase in the number of white, middle-class Americans is "baby boom."

Peace, Justice and Freedom: fuzzy and indefinable terms used to describe the goals of the struggle against U.S. imperialist aggression, which is causing holocausts all over the world. Allows us to ignore the many holocausts taking place in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and other countries, including the holocaust taking place right here in the good old U.S. of A. These words are the left-wing equivalent of the anti-choice "Seamless Garment." FORWARD ALONG THE PATH CHARTED BY CHAIRMAN MAO!

Pedophilia: judgmental term that will soon be eliminated along the way on our march to sexual equality for all regardless of gender or age. The proper term is "intergenerational love."

Personally Opposed, But ...: a handy verbal safety net for politicians with the courage and natural coloring of a canary. Allows them to assume (however distasteful it may be) the unfairly respectable appearance of an anti-choicer while actually supporting full reproductive rights for women everywhere.

Picketing: activity where ignorant anti-choice fanatics block clinic doors, rush and charge at clinic clients, while screaming, shouting, chanting, drooling and yelling, waving disgusting, slanderous and libelous literature at them, and causing all kinds of complicated and dangerous medical reactions, including making clinic staff lose weight (this term is interchangeable with "terrorism" or "harassment").

Pigs and Rent-a-Pigs: police and security guards, respectively (unless they're arresting anti-choice fanatics, in which case we refer to them as "Officer" or "Sir").

Planned Parenthood: the unquestioned source of all wisdom. The legislated teacher of our children, in light of the recognized fact that parents are incompetent, bumbling idiots. A saintly, truthful organization which has undergone severe persecution and trials at the hands of anti-choice fanatics as it struggles to shine the light of its truth all over the world (incidentally, Planned Parenthood does not do abortions).

Pluralism: we Neoliberals in the act of airing our viewpoints, no matter how bizarre, in public. Of course, any conservative doing the same thing is undermining pluralism and attempting to destroy the essential wall of separation between church and state.

Pointing Fingers: you're embarrassing me or a progressive, nonjudgmental, forward-looking group of caring, sympathetic persons by suggesting that what I or they might be doing is anything but what is just right for everyone involved. Alternatively: "You're being judgmental!"

Poor Women: our valiant sisters (usually 'women of color'), downtrodden by the fanatic Religious Right, whom we don't really help, need or talk about until we must have a tearjerker story of how they might butcher themselves if the public doesn't pay for their abortions (er, pardon me, "evacuations of uterine contents"). Also see "Silent No More."

Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS): a fiction invented by ignorant terrorists just to make you feel guilty. After all, we all know (don't we)? that there are never any bad effects caused by abortion.

Potential Life: anything I bloody well want it to be. Watch out, because you may very well become 'potential life' someday!

Products of Conception (blob of tissue, potential life, parasite, uterine contents): You know what we're talking about. Just don't, whatever you do, say the "B" word; it might trigger unacceptable levels of psychological resonance and palpitations in the women we're working so hard to help.

Pro-Life: only those persons who are all of the following: pro-choice, pro-peace, freedom, and justice, pro-animal rights, pro-gay rights, pro-old-growth timber, etc. etc. ad nauseam. Of course, nobody who is "single-issue" qualifies (see "Single-Issue"). And, of course, nobody who is anti-abortion can ever qualify as 'pro-life,' no matter how 'correct' his or her stand is on all the other issues.

Pro-Lifer: When one anti-choicer is to be described, call him a "dangerous fanatic." Two anti-choicers create a "conspiracy." Three anti-choicers are a "well-financed Right-wing group." Ten thousand anti-choicers are "a small and vocal minority." When confronted with more than 100,000 anti-choicers, use the media to create a controversy about the actual count.

Religious Right: the root cause of all our troubles, especially teenage pregnancy and abortions (after all, Planned Parenthood said so).

Radical Feminist: that peculiar creature who can justify upgrading the economic and social status of women at the expense of the lives of at least 10,000,000 other women (contrast with "original feminist," who cares about everyone, no matter how small or helpless). Also, RFs loudly condemn the militaristic, nationalistic, monolithic U.S. government while depending upon that same government's court system to jam their social agendas down the throats of an unwilling public.

Reproductive Freedom: the ability to have as few children as you want while aborting (oops, terminating) as many as you please. The opposite term is "breeding," and is opposed by all Left-thinking people.

Rescue Missions: terroristic tactic being used more and more by the most radical fringe of the anti-choice movement. These hypocrites surround women's choice clinics and claim to be "putting themselves between the innocent victim and the abortionist's scalpel." Sit-ins by anti-nuclear protestors, animal rights activists, or Earth First! sympathizers are, of course, perfectly legitimate methods of expressing anger against the rape of our natural resources and against the genocide routinely practiced by the pig-infested, incurably corrupt military-industrial octopus.

Resent: handy, all-purpose 'feeling' verb used to express indignation toward any anti-choice action (usually combined with other choice sloganistic words); i.e., "I resent your trying to force your religion off on me," or "I resent your pointing fingers by praying outside this abortion clinic."

Sado-Masochism: when two or more people do to each other what they wish they could be doing to intolerant Right-wing fanatics. The proper term is "consensual exchange of power."

Safe(r) Sex: the salvation of the '90s. Just use your condoms, everyone, and soon everything will be all right.

Seamless Garment: an article of clothing, woven of infinitely stretchable and expandable fabric, that allows us to cover and conceal ourselves in a veneer of respectability, no matter what we are doing.

Seven Deadly Sins: racism, sexism, species-ism, homophobia, intolerance, finger-pointing, and voting Republican.

Seven Sacraments: abortion, bestiality, contraception, divorce, free sex, pederasty, and sodomy.

Silent No More: a popular periodic contest to see which dedicated pro-choice activist can write the most imaginative letter whose purpose is to demonstrate that abortion must remain a right enshrined above all others. This letter must involve a detailed story about the agonizing death by illegal abortion of your beloved mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, or dear friend. We give extra points for emotional appeal. Naturally, you must use pseudonyms and omit unnecessary details in order to insure that some ignorant anti-choice fanatic does not attempt to desecrate the memory of your beloved mother, sister, aunt, niece, or dear friend. For further information, call Frank Mendiola in Los Angeles.

Simplistic: my way of muddying the waters by insisting that there is a great big moral and ethical 'grey zone' out there in which I can commit literally any perverted act while attempting to escape all responsibility for my actions, while simultaneously denigrating your argument, which I really can't find a logical answer for, and is the real reason I am using this term. Alternatively: "This is not a black and white issue."

Sin: you're joking, of course. However, if you are going to dogmatically insist upon a one-word definition of sin, it is: INTOLERANCE! (also, see "Seven Deadly Sins").

Single-Issue: handy smoke-screen adjective applied to narrow-minded anti-choice fanatics. This is a term that is never used to describe pro-choice, anti-apartheid, anti-capital punishment, anti-vivisection, anti-logging, anti-war, or any other type of liberal activist, even if they are deeply involved in only one issue. We are trying, by the use of this term, to entangle anti-choice activists in the so-called "Seamless Garment," thereby diluting their efforts on many different causes and rendering their movement ineffective.

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: a group of San Francisco based homosexuals who 'dress up' as Catholic nuns and hold mock 'masses' in public. During these 'masses,' the 'celebrant' distributes condoms in place of the Holy Eucharist, referring to them as "Our Holy Savior." We can get away with this kind of ridicule because Catholics and others don't have the courage to speak out against Sister Mad Power-Hungry B_tch and Sister Missionary Position and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for fear of being labeled "intolerant bigots." In this way, we can ridicule the Catholic church in public and help keep this potentially great force paralyzed with fear that it might be perceived as intolerant or might lose its tax-exempt status.

Slander, Libel, Defamation: I don't like what you're saying, but don't know enough about the subject to substantiate my objections.

Slogan: Loud, robotic repetition of simple words used when pro-choice activists can't think of anything meaningful to say. Useful when anti-choice fanatics are confusing our minds with truth or facts. Examples: "Keep your laws off my body!" and "Not the church, not the state...!"

Small But Vocal Minority: anyone who is not pro-choice. Alternatively: more than 100,000 anti-choicers marching on Washington.

Special-Interest Group: any lavishly-funded, reactionary anti-choice group. By the way, we refer to our organizations as "public-interest groups."

Stereotype: an accurate depiction of a certified victim group. Of course, it is not possible to stereotype ignorant, bigoted, right-wing, Bible-thumping, misogynist, close-minded anti-choice fanatics.

Struggle: the essential verb used in any type of headline pertaining to progressive issues (special favorite of our sisters in the American Revolutionary Communist Party). We don't use verbs like 'fight' or 'battle,' leaving those to our violent, ignorant fanatical opponents.

Subject is Closed, the: I can't reply to that statement of fact (i.e., you have won this argument). Also: "That's just your opinion," or "I don't want to hear any more" (repeated loudly with hands over ears).

Ten Commandments: this is a misleading and judgmental name; these are actually suggestions given to us long ago; ideals to strive for if we feel called to do so. As a practical matter, we cannot expect modern men and women to adhere to these guidelines in this complex technological world. Instead, we try valiantly to follow Ted Turner's "Ten Suggestions."

Terrorism: see "harassment" or "picketing."

That's Not the Point: you have a point.

There Are No 'Right' Answers to This Question: except mine.

There's Room for Argument: anything goes. Or: "This is an emotional issue."

This is a Difficult Question: the subject is closed.

Turn the Clock Back: any anti-choice attempt to establish restrictions on our Goddess-given rights to adultery, abortion, sodomy, bestiality, child sex, etc.

Unwanted Child: any fetus that will interfere in any way, shape, or form with a woman's self-actualization, self-esteem, self-realization, self-aggrandizement, self-orientation, self-development, self-gratification, or self-destruction.

Voting Their Conscience: term applied to any pro-choice legislator who votes in favor of choice and against any anti-choice legislation. When an anti-choice legislator votes in accord with his beliefs, we refer to it as "foisting his morality off on an unwilling public," and "a gross violation of the separation of Church and State."

We Agree in Principle: you have a good point there, and I can't answer it. So I am going to muddy the waters for everyone who is watching because I have made up my mind not to change my opinion and nothing will make me change my beliefs.

We Are, Above All, Sexual Beings: we can engage in any kind of sex we want to, when we want to, with whom (or what) ever we want to (after all, Planned Parenthood said so). This is also why we need school-based sex clinics. After all, teenagers are nothing but uncontrollable animals whose sex drive must be allowed to run unfettered (Faye Wattleton said so).

Well-Financed Right-Wing Fanatic Groups: anyone who attempts to interfere with our Constitutional rights to do anything we bloody well please (excuse me, you're blocking the driveway; I have to park my Porsche).

Women's Choice Clinic: a place where sympathetic, non-judgmental men and womyn [sic] (wimmen [sic], wymyn [sic]) will help you get rid of that nasty blob of tissue (it will only take a minute, honey, and you won't feel a thing), despite the disgustingly offensive actions of those religious fanatic terrorists outside (oh, by the way, honey, we don't take checks).

You Aren't Hearing Me: you don't agree with me.
