First Reading

Hebrews 2:5-12

5For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking.
6It has been testified somewhere, “What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou carest for him?
7Thou didst make him for a little while lower than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honor,
8putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
9But we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one.
10For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering.
11For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
12saying, “I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee.”

Psalms 8:2, 5-9

1O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is thy name in all the earth! Thou whose glory above the heavens is chanted
4what is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou dost care for him?
5Yet thou hast made him little less than God, and dost crown him with glory and honor.
6Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet,
7all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,

Mark 1:21-28

21And they went into Caperʹna-um; and immediately on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
22And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit;
24and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.”
25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
26And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
27And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
28And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

First Reading

Ezekiel 33:12-16

12And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness; and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins.
13Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that he has committed he shall die.
14Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,
15if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
16None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right, he shall surely live.

Psalms 51:8-12, 17, 19

6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8Fill me with joy and gladness; let the bones which thou hast broken rejoice.
9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.
15O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
17The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Gospel

Luke 15:3-7

3So he told them this parable:
4“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it?
5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’
7Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
