1 Corinthians 1:1-9

1Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosʹthenes,
2To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus,
5that in every way you were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge—
6even as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you—
7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ;
8who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalms 145:2-7

2Every day I will bless thee, and praise thy name for ever and ever.
3Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
4One generation shall laud thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
5On the glorious splendor of thy majesty, and on thy wondrous works, I will meditate.

Matthew 24:42-51

42Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
43But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into.
44Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
45“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?
46Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing.
47Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.
48But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’
49and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with the drunken,
50the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know,
51and will punish him, and put him with the hypocrites; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.

Isaiah 58:6-11

6“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
9Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am. “If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.
11And the LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Psalms 112:1-9

1Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments!
2His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3Wealth and riches are in his house; and his righteousness endures for ever.
4Light rises in the darkness for the upright; the LORD is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice.

Matthew 22:34-40

34But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadʹducees, they came together.
35And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him.
36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
38This is the great and first commandment.
39And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”

First Reading

Wisdom 10:10-14

10When a righteous man fled from his brother’s wrath, she guided him on straight paths; she showed him the kingdom of God, and gave him knowledge of angels; she prospered him in his labors, and increased the fruit of his toil.
11When his oppressors were covetous, she stood by him and made him rich.
12She protected him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those who lay in wait for him; in his arduous contest she gave him the victory, so that he might learn that godliness is more powerful than anything.
13When a righteous man was sold, wisdom did not desert him, but delivered him from sin. She descended with him into the dungeon,
14and when he was in prison she did not leave him, until she brought him the scepter of a kingdom and authority over his masters. Those who accused him she showed to be false, and she gave him everlasting honor.

Luke 19:12-19

12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive kingly power and then return.
13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, ‘Trade with these till I come.’
14But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
15When he returned, having received the kingly power, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading.
16The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.’
17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your pound has made five pounds.’
19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
