Letter to the Bishops' Conferences on The Name of God

Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments

On 8 August 2008, the Congregation for Divine Worship addressed a letter to the Conferences of Bishops, giving directives for the liturgical use of the Divine Name as "signified in the tetragrammaton." In accord with Sacred Tradition, the Name itself is not to be used, for which the words "Lord" and "God," or their equivalents in the various languages, are to be substituted.
