ADDRESSES AND HOMILIES BY POPE JOHN PAUL I

Inauguration Homily
On the evening of Sunday, 3 August 1978, Pope John Paul I was chief celebrant at the Mass for the inauguration of his ministry as Supreme Pastor of the Catholic Church. After the Gospel, which was sung first in Latin and then in Greek, the Pope gave the homily, the first part of which was in Latin as being the official language of the Church.

First Angelus Address
In his first Angelus address, 27 August 1978, the Holy Father reflected on his election as Pope and how he chose a double name.

Address to the Sacred College
On 30 August 1978, the Holy Father, John Paul I, received the Sacred College of Cardinals in
the Consistorial Hall of the Vatican Apostolic Palace. He observed the diversity of nations
reflected in the college and spoke of the office of Pope as "a sign and instrument" of the unity of the Church.

Programme of Pope John Paul I
The Pope promised to continue the programme of his predecessor, Paul VI, steering a middle
course between those who would overreach Vatican II and those who might be too hesitant in
putting its "wise norms" into effect.

Address to the Diplomatic Corps
On 31 August 1978, His Holiness John Paul I received the Diplomatic Corps in Audience. In
reply to the speech of the Doyen of the Diplomatic Corps, the Pope spoke of the Vatican's
complementary role in international diplomacy.

Address to Journalists
On 1 September 1978, John Paul I received, in the Hall of Benedictions, journalists accredited
to the Holy See and the audio-visual personnel who had been present in Rome during the
important events of the past days. He praised them for their coverage of the death of Paul VI
and his own election, and urged them to strive for communion among men through social
communication.

Meeting the Roman Clergy
On 7 September 1978 Pope John Paul I addressed the clergy of his new diocese for the first
time.

To Live the Faith
In his General Audience, 13 September 1978, the Holy Father John Paul I spoke on the virtue of faith.

The Christian Family: a Community of Love
On 21 September 1978, Pope John Paul I received in Audience the Archbishops and Bishops of the U.S. Twelfth Pastoral Region, on the occasion of their ad limina visit.

Homily on Taking Possession of His Cathedral
On 23 September 1978, Pope John Paul I took possession of his cathedral, the Archbasilica of St John Lateran, as Bishop of Rome. After the gospel of the Mass which followed the ceremony of taking possession, the Pope delivered the homily.

Progress in Love
During the General Audience, on 27 September 1978, Pope John Paul I delivered an address
on loving God, and our neighbor for His sake.

The Challenge of Evangelization
On the morning of 28 September 1978, his last day on earth Pope John Paul I received
Cardinal Julio Rosales Archbishop of Cebu, with a group of Bishops from the Philippines who
were making their "ad limina" visit. This is the Holy Father's address.
